tenure-track position as Associate Professor of Medical Bioinformatics (salary group W2)

The Faculty of Medicine at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a

tenure-track position as Associate Professor of Medical Bioinformatics (salary group W2)

at the Institute of Medical Informatics, Biometry, and Epidemiology. The position is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of six years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a full professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.

We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible profile in research and teaching. The successful candidate will have an independent research profile and proven expertise and management experience (for instance as head of a junior research group) in the area of data analysis focusing on data gained from omics technologies, also in translational projects. The professor will be responsible for managing the Competence Center Medical Bioinformatics with the core unit Bioinformatics, Data Integration and Analysis. Accordingly, candidates should demonstrate an ability to conduct interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from the Faculty of Medicine and a willingness to become actively involved in our key research priorities and collaborative research projects (collaborative research centers, research training groups, research units). FAU offers further interesting opportunities for collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Sciences.

The professor will be involved in teaching in the degree programs Medicine, Computer Science (minor subject medical informatics), Medical Engineering, Data Science and Medical Process Management, Molecular Medicine and the Master’s degree in Molecular Medicine. We expect the professor to introduce new and innovative teaching formats and content from the research area covered by the professorship.

Other degree programs taught at the Faculty of Medicine are Dentistry, Logopedics, Midwifery Science, Advanced Immunomedicine, Medical Engineering, Master in Health and Medical Management, Master of Health Business Administration, and Master of Science Integrated Immunology.

Successful candidates should demonstrate an excellent academic track record in research and teaching at the highest international standards. They should have substantial research experience abroad and/or international cooperations as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and relevant teaching experience are prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred. The position also requires additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic qualifications. These qualifications may also have been achieved in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as Assistant Professor).

The successful candidate should become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.

FAU offers an outstandingly productive research environment as well as a passionate and multi-disciplinary scholarly community within a vibrant institutional network.

FAU offers career development and an attractive initial package. Based on international standards and transparent performance agreements, FAU ensures a fair tenure-track evaluation process.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
