In recent years, bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics has become a key scien\u00adtific disci\u00adpline \u2014 not only in life science basic research but also in the fields of appli\u00adcation like in pharmaceu\u00adtical research. The first scien\u00adtific confe\u00adrence in Germany dealing with the potential of computer science for biology research took place in 1985 in Braun\u00adschweig already. Later, this confe\u00adrence became the yearly German Confe\u00adrence on Bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics (GCB).<\/p>\n
The intere\u00addi\u00adsci\u00adplinary nature of the field and the hetero\u00adge\u00adneous educa\u00adtional backgrounds (biology, chemistry, medicine, computer science and mathe\u00admatics) of bioin\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcians resulted in a repre\u00adsen\u00adtation in the following scien\u00adtific societies:<\/p>\n
