Computing is omnipresent in the life sciences, as well as in theore\u00adti\u00adcally oriented physics and chemistry, and other areas of scien\u00adtific research. Bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics is now a part of the curri\u00adculum in many life science degree programs. Parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly, the focus of teaching lies on the appli\u00adcation of bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics methods, their oppor\u00adtu\u00adnities, and limita\u00adtions. However, for the develo\u00adpment of bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics methods funda\u00admental computer science knowledge is required. In order to also create an indepth under\u00adstanding of the appli\u00adcation field, i.e. life sciences, special inter\u00addi\u00adsci\u00adplinary study programs have been created that cover both scien\u00adtific fields. This webpage given an overview of the study programs with distinct bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics content.<\/p>\n<p>In Germany, there are diverse oppor\u00adtu\u00adnities to study bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics. The beginning of such a path is the bachelor\u2019s degree. In contrast to uni-disci\u00adplinary programs with long tradi\u00adtions, the contents and concepts of bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics programs are very diverse. This reflects the broad thematic scope of bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics: Almost all methods of computer science are now used in almost all areas of life science research. Therefore, a bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics degree can be more appli\u00adcation-oriented and thus closer to the life sciences, or more method-oriented and thus closer to computer science. Many univer\u00adsities offer bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics master degree programs for their students with a bachelors degree in Molecular Biology or Bioche\u00admistry on the one hand or Computer Science on the other. The orien\u00adtation of a program can mostly be derived from its affiliation in the organization (i.e. the faculty). Eventually, the precise curri\u00adculum defines the content and the overall structure of a program. Due to the hetero\u00adgeneity of the programs, rankings are less meaningful. Criteria for choosing a degree program should in any case include thematic alignment with one\u2019s own interests and the thematic diversity at the programs affiliation. All univer\u00adsities and colleges offer study consul\u00adta\u00adtions; make use of this service!<\/p>\n<p>Bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics master programs offer similarly thematic varieties. When you are interested in a master program, please be aware that the selection criteria and admission requi\u00adre\u00adments may vary signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly between the univer\u00adsities. While at some univer\u00adsities, master\u2019s programs are tailored precisely to the bachelor\u2019s programs offered at the same university, at others, master\u2019s programs in bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics are offered based on a broader spectrum of bachelor\u2019s programs.
