Starting as a connecting disci\u00adpline between computer science and the life sciences, bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics has become an independent sub-disci\u00adpline over the last decades.<\/p>\n<p>High throughput experi\u00adments have become incre\u00adasingly important in chemistry, biology, medicine and pharma\u00adcology. They result in huge amounts of complex data in the areas of genome squencing, expression profiles of proteins and structure eluci\u00addation of proteins as well as inter\u00adac\u00adtions between biomole\u00adcules (proteins, RNA, low molecular-weight compounds). Bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics develop software tools to prepare, evaluate and analyze these data. Bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics develops software tools to prepare, analyze, and interpret these data, playing a crucial role in modern life sciences by generating knowledge from large datasets and making it usable for predicting biolo\u00adgical phenomena.<\/p>\n<p>FaBI has agreed on the following definition of bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics as the foundation of their work:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBioin\u00adfor\u00admatics is an inter\u00addi\u00adsci\u00adplinary science. By bioin\u00adfor\u00admatics we under\u00adstand the research, develo\u00adpment and appli\u00adcation of computer-based methods used to answer biomole\u00adcular and biome\u00addical research questions. The focus lies on models and algorithms for data at the molecular and cellular levels, including:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>genomes and genes<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>gene and protein expression and \u2011regulation,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>metabolic and regulatory pathways and networks,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>struc\u00adtures of biomacro\u00admole\u00adcules, esp.
