Das Max-Planck-Institut für Molekulare Pflanzenphysiologie (MPI-MP) wurde am 1. Januar 1994 unter Gründungsdirektor Prof. Dr. Lothar Willmitzer ins Leben gerufen und nahm mit 16 Mitarbeitern seine Arbeit auf. Inzwischen arbeiten etwa 360 Angestellte aus allen Teilen der Welt daran, die Geheimnisse der Pflanzen zu erforschen.
